What is Flipped Classroom?

English | தமிழ்

A flipped classroom is an instructional strategy where the typical learning environment is reversed. Instead of teachers delivering content during class time, students engage with the material (like watching a video lecture or reading a chapter) outside of class, often at home. Then, during class, students work on applying, discussing, or collaborating on what they learned, typically through activities, problem-solving, or group work.

This approach allows teachers to spend more time on active learning, supporting students as they apply concepts, ask questions, and deepen their understanding, rather than just presenting information. It aims to make the classroom more interactive and personalized.

The Flipped Classroom method can be implemented by adopting the following methods to make teaching more efficient.

Planning

Planning for a flipped classroom involves several key steps to ensure the approach is effective for both students and teachers. Here’s a simple guide for planning:

  1. Set Clear Learning Objectives
  2. Choose the Right Content for Outside the Classroom
  3. Design Active Learning Activities for Class Time
  4. Provide Support and Guidance
  5. Create a Flexible Schedule
  6. Select Appropriate Technology Tools
  7. Evaluate and Reflect

Recording

Recording videos that are relevant to the content of the lesson, engaging the students and reflecting the learning objectives.

Sharing

Send prepared videos or links to the students.

Change

There should be a change in the knowledge of the students regarding the subject matter after watching the videos sent by the teacher. The videos should be tailored accordingly.

Grouping

Dividing the students into groups in the classroom and engaging the students in activities that show their abilities in the areas they have learnt.

Regrouping

Bring the students together again and give them the opportunity to present the issues of the groups. These can take place through dialogue, drama, debate, etc.

This may be followed by evaluation, review and feedback.

In the flipped classroom learning method, students start learning. The teacher will help them clear their doubts. So students eagerly wait to ask questions after watching the videos. With the teacher answering, the subject matter will be under control.

If the students are prepared in advance and completed in the classroom, all the students will be able to take enough time to engage in self learning according to their abilities.
