Minimum Qualification Required to Study in G.C.E. (A/L)

Students should have different qualifications for each subject to study at GCE A/L. The following 07 courses are offered at G.C.E. Advanced Level.

1. Arts Stream
2. Commerce Stream
3. Bio Science Stream
4. Physical Science Stream
5. Engineering Technology 
6. Bio System Technology
7. Vocational Stream

1. Arts Stream

Students studying in the Arts stream should have a minimum qualification of 3C and 3S including  Language and Mathematics and should pay attention to the following special qualifications.

• At least one of the 03 credit passes obtained at the G.C.E. Ordinary Level shall be related to a subject selected for the Advanced Level. Drawing / Music / Dance / Drama and Theatre should have a credit pass (C) in G.C.E. Ordinary Level in that particular subject. (Only the proficiency pass required to study Aesthetic subjects with applied functions can be fulfilled by SBA - 2008/17-i)
• GCE A/L: Proficiency in G.C.E. Ordinary Level in Language/ Religion/ Religious Civilization is to be selected. (2008/17)
• Students who are not proficient in mathematics can learn it in the following years (in the stipulated time). (26/2014)

2. Commerce Stream

Students studying in the Commerce/Commerce stream should have a minimum qualification of 3C, 3S including Language and Mathematics and should pay attention to the following special qualifications.

• Shall have passed at least one of the 3C credits passed at G.C.E. Ordinary Level or Business and Accounting or History. (2008/17-ii)

3. Bio Science Stream

Students studying in the Biological Sciences stream should have a minimum qualification of 3C and 3S including Language and Mathematics and should pay attention to the following special qualifications.

• Should have passed Science with Credit (C) and Ordinary Pass (S) in Mathematics at G.C.E. Ordinary Level. (2008/17)

4. Physical Science Stream

Students studying in the Physical Science stream should have a minimum qualification of 3C and 3S including Language and Mathematics and should pay attention to the following special qualifications.

• Shall have a credit pass in Mathematics (C) and Ordinary pass (S) in Science at G.C.E. Ordinary Level. (2008/17-ii)

5. Engineering Technology 

Students studying in the Engineering Technical stream should have a minimum qualification of 3C and 3S including Language and Mathematics and should pay attention to the following special qualifications.

• Shall have a credit pass in Mathematics (C) and Ordinary pass (S) in Science at G.C.E. Ordinary Level. (25/2013)

6. Bio System Technology

Students studying in the Biosystems Technology stream should have a minimum qualification of 3C and 3S including Language and Mathematics and should pay attention to the following special qualifications.

• Should have passed Science with Credit (C) and Ordinary Pass (S) in Mathematics at G.C.E. Ordinary Level. (25/2013)
• Students with 3C and 3S will be able to learn temporarily (on the Pending condition) and should be able to qualified in Mathematics within the next 2 years. (26/2014)

7. Vocational Stream

The vocational stream was finally introduced in 2017 under the 13-year guaranteed education program for GCE (A/L).

GCE O/L pass will not be considered for studying in this stream.  All students who have passed GCE (O/L) as well as unqualified students are eligible for study at this stream.

It is a subject field that provides vocational education to students.
