Subject Selection for G.C.E (A/L) for All Stream

At present there are 07 streams available for students to study at G.C.E. Advanced Level. They are,

1. Arts Stream
2. Commerce Stream
3. Bio Science Stream
4. Physical Science Stream
5. Engineering Technology
6. Bio System Technology
7. Vocational Stream

• In addition to the three main subjects in the above streams except the vocational stream, students can study the subjects of General Ordinary Examination, General English and General Information Technology.

• However, only the results of the main three subjects and the results of the General Ordinary Examination will be considered at the time of admission to the University. General English results are also considered for certain courses.

Arts Stream

Students should choose the courses based on the following conditions in order to study under the Arts Stream.

1. At least one subject should be selected from the following syllabus (Sub List - 1) in Social Science/ Social Applied Studies. (This does not apply to students who opt for two or all three language subjects) Students can choose two or all three subjects in this module if they wish.
2. If one of the subjects on Religions and Civilizations (Sub List - 2) is selected from the syllabus given below, it will not be possible to select the subject of civilization related to that time. (Example: A person who chooses Islam cannot choose Islamic civilization)
3. Students can choose one or two subjects from the following Aesthetic subjects (Sub List - 3).
4. Students can choose either one subject or two subjects from the language subjects given below (Basket - 4) However, if all 03 are to be selected as language subjects, it should be as follows.
1. All three subjects referred to in (i) in Sub List – 4.
2. In Sub List – 4, all three subjects may be selected in both sub-list (i) and (ii).
5. A student who chooses two language subjects can choose any one of the non-language subjects as his/her third subject.

Module – 01: 

Social Science/ Applied Social Studies

1. Economics
2. Geography
3. History (History of Sri Lanka with Indian History or European History or World History)
4. Home Economics
5. Political Science
6. Logic and Scientific Method
7. Accounting or Business Statistics
8. Agricultural Science or Mathematics
9. One Subject in Technology (Civil Technology, Mechanical Technology, Electronics, Information Technology, Food Technology, Agricultural Technology, High Resource Technology)
10. Communication and Media Studies
11. Information and Communication Technology

Module – 02: 

Religions and Civilizations

1. Buddhism or Buddhist civilization
2. Christianity or Christian civilization
3. Hinduism or Hindu civilization
4. Islam or Islamic civilization
5. Greek and Roman civilizations

Module – 03: 

Aesthetic Subjects

1. Illustration
2. Natyam (national or Bharatanatyam)
3. Music (Oriental, Western or Carnatic music)
4. Drama and Theatre (Sinhala, Tamil or English)

Volume – 04: 

Language Subjects

1. Sinhala, Tamil, English
2. Arabic, Pali, Sanskrit
3. Chinese, Malay, French, German, Russian, Hindi, Japanese

Commerce Stream

Students studying in this steam should choose at least 02 subjects from the following subjects.

1. Accounting
2. Business Studies
3. Economics

The remaining subjects should be selected from the following subjects.

1. Business Statistics
2. Geography
3. Political Science
4. History (History of Sri Lanka with Indian History or European History or World History)
5. Logic and Scientific Method
6. English
7. German
8. French
9. Agricultural Science
10. Combined Mathematics
11. Information and Communication Technology

Bio Science Stream

Students studying under this stream should choose 03 of the following subjects.

1. Biology
2. Chemistry
3. Physics
4. Agricultural Science
5. Mathematics

However, it is mandatory for students to opt for Biology, Chemistry and Physics to study medicine, dentistry, and nursing.

Physical Science Stream

Students studying under this subject should choose 03 of the following subjects.

1. Combined Mathematics
2. Chemistry
3. Physics
4. Higher Mathematics

Technology Stream

Students studying under Technology stream should select one subject in each division from Division A, B and C from the following table. It has two sections.

Engineering Technology

Students studying in Engineering Technology stream will have to choose Engineering Technology in Division A and from B and C they will have to choose one subject in each module.

Bio System Technology

Students studying in Biosystems Technology stream will have to choose the subject of Biosystems Technology in Division A and one subject in each module from B and C.

Vocational Stream

The following are the three major components of the Vocational Stream.

1. Vocational Subjects
2. Institutional Training

• At present 09 subjects have been introduced as general subject and 26 subjects as vocational subjects.
• It is compulsory for all students to study all the subjects (09 subjects) of the General Subject in Term 1 of Grade 12.
• In the 2nd and 3rd Term of Grade 12, out of 26 subjects related to industry, one should choose any 03 subjects of his/her choice.
• In Grade 13, students have to choose only one of the three subjects that have already been selected. In addition, institutional vocational training should be undertaken. (The maximum period of education in this division is 02 years)
